If you love to run…in the rain, in the heat and in the cold, then the distance sport of Cross Country is probably for you. Training begins during the summer months with shorter runs gradually building in distance and endurance during the course of the fall season. The Holy Angels cross country team led by veteran coach, Howard Schuman, is one of the top teams in the northern New Jersey area. In 2013 we won our 9th straight Bergen County Group B Championship, and finished second at the Bergen Meet of Champions, 2nd in the State Group Meet and won the Big North League Championship. In the last three years we have had four girls receive athletic scholarships for Cross Country. Our runners develop strong bonds and unique friendships as they run and run and run.
Year in Review
Despite many unfortunate injuries that plagued the team for most of the season, things started to turn around with a first place finish at the Garret Mountain Invitational. The County Championship was organized differently this year, and the non-public schools were grouped together in a separate division. Still trying to get healthy, the team lost to IHA in this meet…but regrouped and earned a 3rd place finish at the County Meet of Champions, avenging their loss the week before to IHA who only placed 6th in the meet. Soph Rhiannon Novelli and Frosh Mackenzie Hughes have been consistently strong for the Angels all year . The team had a 4th place finish overall at the State Group Meet and Rhiannon Novelli with a 7th place finish earned a spot in the State Meet of Championships.
