A Half-Century of Dedication: Celebrating Coach Sue Liddy’s 50 Years at Holy Angels

For half a century, Coach Sue Liddy has been a cornerstone of the Academy of the Holy Angels, inspiring countless students and athletes with her passion, dedication, and unwavering belief in the power of education and sports. As she marks her 50th year at AHA, we take a moment to reflect on her journey, her impact, and the legacy she has built.

Fresh out of college, Sue Liddy was offered a job at AHA in 1974—and she never looked back. Initially teaching physical education, health, first aid, and driver’s education, she quickly became a familiar face on the field and court. Over the years, she has coached numerous sports, including basketball, softball, soccer, volleyball, cross country, and now JV tennis. She was also the athletic director for 13 years, helping the athletic program grow from 3 sports to 12. Her diverse involvement reflects her lifelong commitment to the athletic and personal growth of our Angels.

“This was my first and only job” she shared. “I’ve had the privilege of working with some amazing kids who constantly keep me on my toes—and make me feel young.” When asked about her fondest memories, Sue Liddy beamed as she recounted the joy of working with AHA’s students. “The kids make it all worth it,” she said. “They keep you current, challenge you, and even help you with tech problems.”

Over 50 years, Holy Angels has evolved significantly, and Coach Liddy has witnessed it all. From the development of state-of-the-art athletic facilities to the introduction of turf fields, the school’s transformation has been remarkable. Yet, the heart of AHA—the students and their drive—remains constant.

Among her many achievements, certain milestones stand out. Leading AHA’s basketball team to five Bergen County Championships—back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000—remains a highlight of her career. “The first championship is always the most special,” she said, “but winning back-to-back titles was something extraordinary.” This past winter, Coach Liddy celebrated her 800th career win with the varsity Basketball team, a testament to her skill and leadership.

When asked what has kept her motivated for 50 years, her answer was simple: the kids. “I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t think I could make a difference in their lives, and I hope somewhere along the way I have,” she said. Her advice to current and future members of the AHA community reflects the wisdom of her parents: “Find a job that you love, do it well, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Beyond the gym, AHA has profoundly shaped her life. “Being at Holy Angels has taught me how to communicate with people better,” she noted. The relationships she’s built over the decades—with students, staff, and alumni—have left an indelible mark. “I’m still friends with so many colleagues and students I’ve met along the way.”

As she reflects on this incredible milestone, Coach Liddy is humbled by the journey. “I never thought I’d be here for 50 years,” she said. “I’ve met so many people who have influenced me—students and teachers alike.”

Her impact, however, is undeniable. For 50 years, Coach Sue Liddy has been more than a teacher and a coach; she has been a mentor, a role model, and an integral part of AHA’s legacy. Her passion and dedication continue to inspire the next generation, ensuring that her influence will be felt for years to come.

Congratulations, Coach Liddy, on 50 remarkable years at the Academy of the Holy Angels. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of so many Angels!
