A World-Class Experience: Holy Angels’ Exclusive Oxford Study Abroad Program
For nearly 150 years, the Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest, New Jersey, has empowered young women to lead lives of purpose, achievement, and global perspective. Renowned for its exceptional academics and commitment to leadership and critical thinking, AHA offers students opportunities that reach far beyond the classroom, including a one-of-a-kind study abroad experience at one of the world’s most prestigious universities.
Each spring, 30 select students in grades 10 through 12 travel to Oxford University for an immersive academic and cultural experience. The Oxford Study Abroad Program is exclusive to Holy Angels and remains one of the many reasons families choose AHA for their daughters’ education.
The program was created by Nancy Schneberger, retired English Department Chair, who still leads it today. Longtime chaperones Gail Fair, History Department Chair, and Nancy’s husband, Bill Schneberger, have helped shape this transformative journey for countless students over the years.
What makes the Oxford experience so exceptional is its intentional design. The curriculum focuses on two cornerstone skills: critical thinking and public speaking skills at the heart of the AHA mission and vital to success in any field. Students attend classes led by Oxford doctoral candidates, engage in seminar-style discussions, and prepare a final performative assessment.
“This isn’t just a tour abroad; it’s a true academic experience,” says Schneberger. “We challenge our students to think deeply, question boldly, and present their ideas with clarity and confidence.”
While academics are central to the trip, the cultural immersion makes the experience unforgettable. During their free time, students explore Oxford’s historic streets, take part in local cultural activities, and visit world-class museums and historic landmarks. The group tours both Oxford and London, attends theater performances, and even enjoys a traditional punting experience on the Thames.
For many students, living in Oxford dormitories and managing daily life abroad is their first taste of college-style independence. It’s an experience that builds confidence, maturity, and self-reliance.
“It taught me to be more independent, more accountable,” shared one participant. “It gave me a preview of the kind of life I want to lead in college.”
The Oxford Study Abroad Program stands out as a defining opportunity, an elite academic experience that few high schools can offer.
Backed by Holy Angels’ legacy of academic excellence and guided by educators who know how to bring out the best in every student, the Oxford Study Abroad Program is more than a trip abroad, it’s a launchpad for leaders, learners, and thinkers and part of what makes the Academy of the Holy Angels extraordinary.
