AHA Congratulates Mary Nonna Dunphy Finalists & Semifinalists
Finalists and semifinalists for the 2022-23 Sister Mary Nonna Dunphy Scholarships were announced at the Academy of the Holy Angels’ October 24 Foundation Day celebration. Finalists, each of whom receives a $2,500 award, include seniors Caroline Dupas of Pearl River, New York, and Faith Youn of Closter; juniors Aiko “Mia” Chang of Valley Cottage, New York, and Hyerin “Ella” Eom of Palisades Park; and sophomores Alessandra Boncaldo of Stony Point, New York, and Margaret “Molly” Doherty of New City, New York.
Semifinalists are seniors Giselle Acosta of Fort Lee, Giovanna Corbisiero of Franklin Lakes, Ava Goyal of Montclair, Shivani Sahu of Paramus, and Isabel Stein of Rutherford; juniors Beatrice Gee of Englewood, Olivia Papp of Hawthorne, and Elise Tao of Upper Saddle River; and sophomores Sharanya Agarwal of West New York, Julianna Dail of Saddle River, Lilianna Garber of Mahwah, and Sienna Morreale of Edgewater.
The AHA Board of Directors established these scholarships during the 1990-91 academic year, when Holy Angels was celebrating the 25th anniversary of the school’s move from Fort Lee to Demarest. The awards are presented in honor AHA’s foundress, S. Mary Nonna Dunphy, SSND.
Seniors, juniors, and sophomores are invited to apply for the Nonna Dunphy Scholarship based on academic achievement, leadership, character, service, and teacher recommendations. Successful applicants must reflect the ideals S. Mary Nonna Dunphy embodied and encouraged in her students. In particular, applicants must be able to make decisions based on faith, character, and gospel values. The Scholarship Committee interviews the applicants and selects the finalists. Finalists and semifinalists are honored on Foundation Day, the anniversary of the establishment of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious school serves young women from many cultural and religious backgrounds.
