AHA Tennis Wins Big North Team of the Year and Players of the Year Honors
The Academy of the Holy Angels tennis team continues to make waves in the high school sports scene, earning the prestigious Big North Team of the Year title and celebrating two standout players, Mia Custodio ’26 and Avery Chang ’28, who were named Players of the Year. Their achievements highlight a stellar season filled with grit, determination, and team spirit.
As a first doubles pair, junior Mia Custodio and freshman Avery Chang forged an unbeatable partnership on the court. The dominant duo secured the flight title at the Bergen County Tournament (BCT) and advanced to the semifinals of the highly competitive state doubles tournament. Along the way, they delivered one of the season’s most memorable performances, upsetting two-time defending champions Isabelle Chen and Leila Souayah of Pingry in a thrilling quarterfinal match. Custodio and Chang’s skill and synergy also played a crucial role in Holy Angels’ team success. Their contributions helped secure the BCT team championship and powered the Angels to the Non-Public, North sectional final, where they overcame Newark Academy in a nail-biting semifinal. The doubles duo were named Bergen County First Team, alongside their teammate Jaime Carlin in singles.
The Holy Angels tennis team finished the season with a remarkable 14-1 record, including a perfect 4-0 performance within the United Division of the Big North. Under the leadership of Coach Meaghan Williams, the Angels clinched the Bergen County Tournament team title in late September. Their success was fueled by standout performances across the roster, including Alexandra Darmanin winning at third singles and Jaime Carlin reaching the finals in first singles.
2024 Varsity Players include: Chloe Hahn, Chloe Jiaravanon, Sophia Rigoli, Jaime Carlin, Eva Cho, Mia Custodio, Taylor Glynn, Francesca Rigoli, Alexandra Darmanin, Norah Park, and Avery Chang.
The Angels’ season was marked by victories over some of the top teams in New Jersey, including Ramapo, Bergen Tech, Tenafly, Ridgewood, and Northern Highlands. Their journey culminated in a hard-fought sectional final against Pingry, where they narrowly missed the title but solidified their status as the No. 2-ranked team in the state.
Holy Angels’ tennis program has set a new standard for excellence, demonstrating that success is built on teamwork, talent, and perseverance. Whether it was the unforgettable wins, the intense rivalries, or the collective drive to achieve greatness, this was a season for the books!
Congratulations to the Holy Angels tennis team, Big North Team of the Year, and to Mia Custodio and Avery Chang, our well-deserved Players of the Year!
