This course unfolds similarly to 6th and 7th grades. The first quarter of the course builds upon the foundational skills developed in previous years, integrating their understanding of rhythm and pitch to cultivate a more holistic comprehension of music reading, theory, and notation. Through practical exercises and application through performance, students refine their ability to interpret, understand, and perform written music. The second half of the course immerses students in the worlds of American Jazz, blues, and music of the 20th century. They delve into the origins, styles, and cultural influences that shaped these genres through listening sessions, historical explorations, and hands-on activities. Students analyze key artists, compositions, and stylistic elements that define each genre, and form connections to music beyond the scope of art music. Over the course of the semester, students actively participate in discussions, and creative projects that deepen their understanding of musical expression within diverse cultural contexts. They explore the societal impacts, technological advancements, and artistic revolutions of contemporary music that foster a nuanced appreciation for these genres.
