Golfers Repeat as State Champs
Lightning has struck twice for the Academy of the Holy Angels Golf Team, the winners of a second consecutive state title. Golfers who played in the May 14 statewide tournament at the Raritan Valley Country Club in Bridgewater were Sharanya Agarwal of West New York, Olivia Lee of Closter, Eleanor Lim of Englewood Cliffs, Emma Bang of Paramus, and Inha Jun of Edgewater.
Current team members also include Angelina Kim and Mikhayla Herrera of Tenafly, Senior Captain Sidney Chung of Cresskill, Angelina Simpadian of Northvale, Alice Lee of Haworth, Claudia Parlamis of Demarest, and Christina Hur of Closter.
“This is the most talented team I have ever coached,” Varsity Golf Coach/social studies teacher Patrick Dunne said. “Their desire, confidence in their abilities, and their love of the team are second to none. I am very proud of — not just their accomplishments — but of the young women they are becoming. Winning a state championship is a major accomplishment. To repeat and win a second is even more amazing. This is, without a doubt, the ‘Golden Age’ of AHA Golf.”
Scores from the state championship match include Olivia Lee, 73; Inha Jun, 74; Sharanya Agarwal, 75; Eleanor Lim, 82; and Emma Bang, 89. The team total was 305 (using the top four scores). The second place team, Wardlaw-Hartridge, had a 318. Bergen Tech was third with a 320.
“We won our division with a perfect 14-0 division record, we won the Arcola Invitational tournament, we won the Big North League tournament, we won the Bergen County Championship tournament, and we won the State Sectional tournament in order to qualify for the State Championship tournament — and we then repeated as state champions,” Dunne said, summarizing his team’s storybook season.
This year has been quite successful for Dunne, whose bowling team finished their season as Big North Conference JV Bowling Invitational Champions, Big North Conference United Division Champions, North 2 Group 2 State Sectional Champions, and NJSIAA Group 2 Finalists.
