Mathematics

In 6th Grade Math, students build a strong foundation in numerical and algebraic expressions, fraction and decimal operations, ratios, rates, percents, integers, equations and inequalities, geometry, measurement, and statistics. Each chapter builds on prior learning as students use models, precise computation, and real-world applications to solve problems. Throughout the course, students explain their reasoning, select efficient strategies, check their results, and use mathematical tools appropriately. Upon successful completion, students are placed in either 7th Grade Math or 7th Grade Advanced Math Honors based on established prerequisites.

In 7th Grade Math, students deepen their understanding of foundational algebraic concepts through conceptual models, precise computation, problem solving, and real-world applications. They use mathematical language and symbolic notation to translate written and real-world problems into expressions and equations. Topics include operations with rational numbers, proportional reasoning, geometry, probability, statistics, and a strong emphasis on linear relationships. Students write and graph linear equations, solve equations and inequalities, and explain their reasoning as they select strategies and check whether their answers are reasonable. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be placed in 8th Grade Math.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of 6th Grade Math.

7th Grade Advanced Math Honors is an accelerated course that integrates 7th and 8th Grade standards, providing a rigorous and fast-paced learning experience. Students engage with more complex mathematical concepts and are expected to demonstrate independence, strong problem-solving skills, and consistent effort. The course emphasizes deeper conceptual understanding and the application of mathematics in real-world contexts. Students will analyze, interpret, and model mathematical relationships while strengthening both analytical and critical thinking skills. Topics of Study Include: algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities, linear functions and graphing, patterns and relationships in data, geometry concepts, and statistics and probability.  Upon successful completion of 7th Grade Advanced Math Honors, students will be placed into Algebra 1 Honors.

Prerequisites:

• 6th Grade Math students with an average of 95% or higher following a full-year grade review in June.

• • Achievement of 95% or higher on the Math Placement Exam

• Demonstrated strong work habits, consistent effort, and effective problem-solving skills

• Consistent completion of assignments and assessments

In 8th Grade Math, students build on prior learning as they deepen their understanding of algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability. They solve and graph linear equations and inequalities, explore systems of equations and functions, and analyze patterns and relationships in data. Students also study coordinate plane transformations, angle relationships, area, and volume. Through independent and collaborative problem solving, they strengthen their mathematical reasoning and apply what they learn to real-world situations. Upon successful completion of the course, students are placed in Algebra I.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of 7th Grade Math.

This course is a modern introduction to Algebra which leads to the understanding of the basic structure of algebra through an informal and intuitive approach. Students will be provided with an in-depth study of the language of Algebra. A substantial amount of time is spent on skills and concepts to enable students to make the transition from arithmetic to Algebra. Application of these skills and concepts is also enforced. The graphing calculator, TI-84, will be introduced when graphing is studied. Upon successful completion of Algebra 1 Honors, students will be placed in Geometry.
