Multi-sport Standout Allison Bart Receives 2021 Angel Award

Allison Bart, a 2021 graduate of the Academy of the Holy Angels, has received the Angel Award, the most prestigious honor an AHA varsity athlete can attain. Bart’s honor, which includes a $1,500 scholarship, was announced at the Parents’ Athletic Association’s virtual spring sports recognition event on June 15. This Upper Saddle River resident was honored for her contributions to the varsity basketball, soccer, and softball teams and for her exceptional dedication, spirit, and leadership.

As a member of the basketball team, Bart earned First Team All-League, Honorable Mention All-County, and the Coach’s Award from AHA legend Sue Liddy. Bart is also an All-League honoree in varsity soccer and varsity softball. During her years at AHA, Bart was a member and senior president of the Student Athletic Association. She maintained an excellent grade point average and participated in service projects that included the renovation of storm damaged homes in Puerto Rico through a cooperative effort run by AHA and the Saint Bernard Project.

“Simply playing for the love of the game, this athlete pushed herself, in every sport, to be the best that she could be,” AHA Athletic Director Patti Gorsuch said of Bart. “She has garnered 10 varsity letters, and has received All-League honors in three different sports. She is an honor roll student, a peer tutor, an amazing video editor, and a dedicated volunteer for many organizations. She has learned how to ‘do it all’ without dropping the ball on anything.”

Gorsuch observed Bart’s transformation over the years, noting “a maturity and a personal growth that turned this athlete into a responsible leader, willing to tackle any task with a smile. Without question, she has become the poster child for growth mindset here at Holy Angels…(S)he knows she is not perfect, and has made a commitment to get better in everything that she does, day in and day out.”

AHA Principal Jean Miller and PAA President Kerry Ann Flahive congratulated the athletes and the coaches.

Isabelle Egan received the NJSIAA Student Athlete Award, a $500 scholarship that is presented to the AHA athlete who graduates with the highest grade point average. Egan graduated Second in Merit. She is an All-State, All-County, and All-League bowler and an All-League softball player.

Gymnastics standout Faith Furletti earned multiple honors, including a $1,000 PAA scholarship, and a $500 scholarship from the Bergen County Women Coaches Association for earning the most All-County awards in the past four years. This All-State gymnast also had her uniform retired during the awards presentation.

Allison Bart and Ciara Donegan received the BCWCA Multi-sport Award. Donegan also earned a PAA scholarship.

Big North Awards were presented to five of AHA’s top scholar athletes, including Isabelle Egan, bowling and softball; Ashley Thompson, gymnastics and track; Mary Flahive, pole vaulting; Julia Macaluso, soccer and track; and Julianna Camporeale, soccer.

MVP awards went to Isabella Westervelt and Isabelle Egan, softball; Emily Danahy, lacrosse; Samantha Han and Amelia Shen, golf; and Eliza Hoover and Ciara Donegan, track.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious high school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. Over time, thousands of women have passed through AHA’s portals. Many go on to study at some of the nation’s best universities, earning high-ranking positions in medicine, government, law, education, public service, business, arts, and athletics. The Academy’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
