AHA Students Join Global Voices at the UN for International Day of the Girl

On October 11, 2024, students from the Academy of the Holy Angels once again participated in the United Nations’ “Girls Speak Out” event in celebration of the International Day of the Girl. This annual event serves as a powerful platform for young women worldwide to advocate for girls’ rights, equality, and empowerment. The School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND), who sponsor Holy Angels and are registered with the UN as an NGO, continue to foster opportunities for AHA students to engage in impactful global discussions.

This year, the Academy sent a group of bright and motivated students to New York City, including Ella Buoncuore, Joy Lee, Lilliana Cardamone, Liliana Garber, Jianne Gener, Jaqueline Garcia, Caroline Visnovsky, Audrey Collins, Christina Yeo, Eva Jurcevic, and Clare Gullo. They were chaperoned by social studies teacher and Model UN moderator Jennifer Cucchisi, and religious studies teacher Jonathan Blevis. Being at the UN allows our students to see firsthand how young women across the globe are championing causes that resonate deeply with their own experiences. It’s inspiring for them to be part of such an important conversation.

Students attending the event had the opportunity to listen to presentations from girl activists from a wide array of countries, discussing topics like leadership, education, violence, and gender equality. This experience reinforced AHA’s mission of developing leaders who work to promote justice, peace, and the dignity of all.

One of the attendees reflected on the impact of the day, saying, “It was incredible to hear the stories of girls from so many different parts of the world, yet see how our hopes for the future are connected. I feel more motivated than ever to advocate for the rights of girls everywhere.”

The International Day of the Girl was established in 2011 by the UN General Assembly’s adoption of Resolution 66/170, creating a space to spotlight young female leaders and explore ways to improve the lives of girls worldwide. Holy Angels students have participated in this event for years, a tradition that continues to inspire new generations of leaders at the Academy.

Founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1879, the Academy of the Holy Angels is the oldest private girls’ school in Bergen County. While AHA is steeped in Catholic tradition, this prestigious school serves young women from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds. AHA’s current leaders continue to further the SSND mission to provide each student with the tools she needs to reach the fullness of her potential—spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically, by offering a first-rate education in a nurturing environment where equal importance is placed on academic excellence, character development, moral integrity, and service to others.
